Remember the lessons of kindergarten:

play nicely with others.

Chapter 29:

Dungeons, clubs and play parties

Most large communities will have a local club or dungeon/play space where kinksters get together to socialize and play. These places aren’t for everyone, but they can be enormous fun.

Every club has its own rules, but most are private, meaning that you have to be invited by a member, or screened in some way, before anyone will even tell you where it is. Reasons for this include:

Protecting the privacy of its members, who may not want everyone in town knowing they’re kinky.

Protecting the club itself from “tourists” who just want to “see the freak show,” and members of the media looking for a sensational story.

Keeping a low profile to avoid scrutiny from law enforcement and politicians. Most clubs are fully licensed and completely legal, but the conservative environment of many communities still make our clubs vulnerable to people operating on misinformation and ignorance. Many a politician looking for votes has targeted “adult entertainment” and other “vices.” No one wants to be raided by the cops or picketed by local churches.

Clubs are great for those people who can’t play at home because of children, thin walls or lack of space. Not everybody has the room or disposable income for their own private dungeon. Clubs have a wide variety of wonderful equipment to be enjoyed: crosses, whipping posts, cages, swings and real exam tables for medical play.

Not everybody who goes to the club on a Saturday night actually uses the play equipment, however. Many people simply go to socialize with their friends and meet new people. Some go because it gives them a chance to dress up in their wildest, sexiest clothes. Others attend because it’s a place where they can truly be themselves; masters can lead their slaves around on leashes, and submissives can kneel naked at their dominant’s feet.

Communities that don’t have a club often have play parties in private homes or in a rented space like a hotel ballroom or banquet hall.

Most clubs have a cover charge, membership fee or suggested donation to help cover the operational costs, but most are staffed by volunteers. Often you are asked to sign a waiver and show proof of your age. Minors are absolutely forbidden; depending on the state, the legal age may be 18 or 21.

One thing that surprises a lot of people is that many of these clubs and parties do not allow alcohol. There are two reasons for this. First, many feel that alcohol or any other substance that can impair judgment or sensation is not safe for BDSM activity. Secondly, the presence of alcohol makes getting an operating license much more complicated and opens the club to other legal issues.

Every club has its own policy about how much sex and nudity is permitted. These rules are not about prudishness, but safety and local laws.
